WASHINGTON (ABC7) — Fifty-seven models scored big in the 2019 Top Safety Picks. This year the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety continues to raise the bar on its crash testing.
"This year the biggest change was increasing the requirements for the passenger side small overlap tests and we have been encouraged by what we are seeing automakers are doing a better job at improving the structure on that side of the vehicle,” says David Harkey, President of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Subaru leads the way with seven models earning the elite Top Safety Pick Plus award including Subaru's Crosstek, Legacy and Outback.
Top Safety Pick Plus award winners have the highest rating for passenger-side protection in small overlap front crashes and have good-rated available headlights.
Tests did show headlights on many vehicles are an issue.
"We're continuing to see a number of vehicles that do not have headlights that will achieve a good rating in our tests,” adds Harkey.
Researchers are now working with car makers in hopes of offering well-rated headlights on all standard vehicles.
Absent from the awards this year are Fiat Chrysler's Dodge, Jeep and Ram brands. Ford and it's Lincoln brand. GM's Buick and Cadillac. Chevy and GMC brands and Tesla. All failed to qualify.
