Springfield school counselor named Virginia Counselor of the Year

Dr. Terri Mason, Virginia Counselor of the Year (ABC7)

School counselor Dr. Terri Mason has been advising students at Hunt Valley Elementary School for more than two decades.

This year, the Virginia Counselors Association named her the Counselor of the Year.

Mason has been a counselor for 24 years, but she started as a teacher and quickly learned that school counseling was her calling. A calling that requires focusing on the unique needs of students.

Dr. Mason describes a good counselor as ”One who listens and looks at the whole person, the whole child, to try to figure out what's happening with them.”

After making that determination, she says, “the real work begins.”

Mason has also worked as a counselor at the high school level and a counselor educator at George Mason University.
