17-year-old driver dies, 2 teens injured after crashing into tree in Fairfax County

A 17-year-old boy has died after a Jeep he was driving crashed into a tree Tuesday afternoon in Clifton, police say.

In a letter to parents, Robinson Secondary School principal Matthew W. Eline said Conner McGowan, a junior at the school, died overnight.

Two other teens were injured and one of them remains in a hospital, according to a statement from Fairfax County Police.

Police say they were called to the scene of the crash at Fairfax Station Road near Colewood Estates Road at around 1:55 p.m. Detectives say they think speed factored into the Jeep driving off Fairfax Station Road and hitting the tree. Alcohol was not considered a factor, police say.

Two of the teens were flown to a hospital by helicopter with life-threatening injuries. The other was taken in an ambulance, officials say.

The crash is currently under investigation, police say.
