Metropolitan Police Department officers spent Wednesday spreading a little holiday cheer.

“I am your sponsored driver for the day,” Officer Jason Medina said, smiling, as he pushed a shopping cart through the store.

The officers teamed up with 100 kids from across the community, giving them an opportunity to shop for holiday gifts.

“It means probably more than what I can imagine, simply because I never had the opportunity growing up as a child to do something like this,” Officer Medina said.

On Wednesday, he strolled the aisles of Target with six-year-old Nevah Taylor.

“Now, it’s time to go to the Paw Patrol area!” Taylor said excitedly, pointing across the store.

Each child was given $100 to spend.

“I like shopping!” Taylor said, holding up a toy.

The Heroes and Helpers event was an opportunity to bring a few smiles and build connections.

“The best part, for me, would be getting to meet the officers and have fun with them,” said 12-year-old Jeremiah Jackson.

“The climate of what it is, what’s going on today is, sometimes it isn’t the best situations for us but what we want to do is we want to identify that this is not who we are, we are here to support, we are here to help the community,” Officer Medina said.
