Police: Juvenile in critical condition after shooting in Prince George's County (Jay Korff/ABC7)

The Prince George's County Police are investigating a shooting that left an 11-year-old boy in critical condition.

Police say officers responded to the scene at around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday in Suitland.

The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body and police believe the shooting was accidental.

In a press conference, police said a 33-year-old former military member accidentally shot his 11-year-old neighbor while babysitting.

The gun, according to authorities, accidentally fired while the man was putting it away.

ABC7's Jay Korff says the man rushed the child to the hospital himself.

The shooting happened in the 3000 block of Bellamy Way.

The family of the 11-year-old boy released the following statement Wednesday:
