The 2017 NFL draft saw plenty of surprises with eight offensive players, including three quarterbacks, selected in the first 12 picks Thursday night.

In a draft loaded with defense, most mock drafts had Alabama's Jonathan Allen and other defensive stars off the board within the top 10 picks, but he and others surprisingly slid to the mid-to-late first round.

Allen fell in the lap of the Washington Redskins at no. 17. Hands down this was one of the biggest first round steals, and the Skins get an "A" for selecting one of the best players in this year's draft class.

The 286 pound stalwart has the versatility to play defensive end and an interior rusher depending on the defensive packages the Skins run.

Allen's shoulder issues presumably made some teams skittish to select him.

Allen, according to most mock drafts, was easily a top-5 pick expected to land with the Chicago Bears at no. 3. However, the Bears shocked most of the football world and selected North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.

According to, the Redskins were also considering Allen's Alabama teammate linebacker Reuben Foster and Missouri defensive end Charles Harris.

The opportunity to come home and play had to be extra sweet for Allen, who played at Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn, Virginia, according to

This franchise needed a boost given their tumultuous offseason with the losses of three starters from last year's team. Defensive lineman Chris Baker, and wide receivers DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon.

The Redskins hope the addition of Allen will bolster a defense that includes cornerback Bashaud Breeland and safeties Su'a Cravens and D.J. Swearinger.

Last season the team finished 8-7-1 and missed the playoffs. With Allen in their front seven, this franchise hopes he's one of the catalysts to help get them back into the playoffs.
