Gorgeous today but the next heat wave is on the horizon

Next heat wave starts this weekend and lasts through much of next week

While it has been seasonably cool and comfortable over the past few days, the heat is set to return in a big way by early next week. We’ve been under the influence of a ridge of high pressure overhead after the cold front passed through the region last Wednesday. Low temperatures dropped into the 50s this morning in the suburbs to mid 60s in town. Elkins, WV even recorded a low of 49 this morning, talk about a crisp morning!

Looking ahead, high pressure is forecast to move off the southeast coast, ensuring more of a southerly flow back into the Mid Atlantic by later this weekend. While Saturday looks to remain comfortable with highs in the mid 80s and low humidity, Sunday will usher in the heat and humidity with highs back near 90 degrees.

This pattern is expected to continue through late next week, with high temperatures in the mid 90s by Wednesday and Thursday. Dew points will be back around 70, leading to heat index values closer to 100 degrees. A cold front will move through the region Thursday bringing the next chance for storms. It’s a little far out, but with the approaching cold front and plenty of heating a few storms may be on the stronger side so keep that in the back of your mind for now and we’ll update you on any changes.

While a brief reprieve from the heat is expected into next weekend, another shot of heat is possible into the start of September so don’t get too hopeful for a long stretch of Fall weather in the next few weeks.
