Icy start for Wednesday across the DMV

A quiet Tuesday night is going to turn into a messy wintry mix by early Wednesday morning.

At the onset, some snow and sleet is expected, but the biggest concern for most of our area is ice. Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings have been issued for most of the ABC7 area starting at 3 a.m.

Advisories end at 10 a.m. near D.C. and run later into the afternoon for West Virginia and into Western Maryland. The difference in timing is based on when the temperatures warm above freezing. The warming happens later farther west and at higher elevations across our area.

The mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain will move in between 2 and 3 a.m.. The D.C. Metro area won't see a lot of accumulation, however even a small amount of ice could be a big problem on untreated surfaces.

The National Weather Service has put out these expected ice accumulations with a bullseye where we have a Winter Storm Warning:

Most icing around the metro area will happen early, before 8 a.m. We will likely see a break in any precipitation for the mid-morning, followed by rain later. Freezing rain could persist into the afternoon farther west.

Good Morning Washington will be on early with the latest weather and road conditions around the area starting at 4 a.m.!
